Chem 13 News - ChemEd 09 Mini-issue

Chem 13 news prepared a mini-issue for ChemEd 09. It is a sample of the types of material published in Chem 13 News. Not all the labs are complete in the mini issue so here is a list of the labs and demonstrations.

Volume of CO2 in a Pop Rocks® candy package, published February 2009
Students are asked to determine the volume (at 1 atmosphere) of carbon dioxide released in a package of Pop Rocks®. It is a lot of fun and not too difficult for students to come up with a reasonable solution. By Bryan May

“Potato soup” demonstration — enzymatic catalysis, published February 2009
The entertaining “potato soup” demonstration, which has been presented to students and adults from all ages, is also interesting and helpful to science and chemistry teachers. The procedure demonstrates the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide in the presence of the biological catalyst catalase. By Emil Lozanov
